As winter gives way to spring, excitement fills the air for anglers in South Dakota. The highly anticipated "ice out" period on Lake Francis Case isn't just a seasonal transition; it's a signal for thrilling fishing opportunities. March 2025 did not disappoint!

Ice out marks the fishing season's kick-off. During this time, fish emerge from their winter hiding places, eager to feed after months of dormancy. When water temperatures begin to rise, they become more active. For walleye fishing, this is particularly fruitful, as anglers can target larger fish during this transition. In past years, I've observed a significant increase in fish activity during the first two weeks after ice out.

When the ice finally receded from Lake Francis Case (maybe a little before), I jumped at the opportunity, excited to be out on the water.

In anticipation of fishing, I meticulously organized my tackle box and reviewed my gear. Choosing effective equipment is crucial, especially when pursuing walleye. I packed a variety of jigs, crankbaits, and live bait to increase my chances of success.

I navigated to our hotspots on Lake Francis Case, known for abundant walleye populations.

Within moments, I felt the familiar tug of a walleye on my line. My heart raced as I reeled in a stunning 24-inch walleye—its shimmering green scales glistening under the sun. The thrill of the catch was unforgettable, with another season underway.

For me, fishing isn't just about the catch; it’s about respecting the ecosystem and ensuring that future generations can enjoy these experiences as well. We respect the limits, as set forth by the SD Game, Fish and Parks Department.

As I continued fishing during this peak period, I exchanged stories and fishing techniques with other guides who share my passion, while comparing our catches.

Lake Francis Case offers breathtaking beauty beyond just the fishing. The surrounding landscape, with its rolling hills and vibrant vegetation, captivates the soul.

Fishing for walleye in South Dakota allows you to connect with nature deeply. Each glance at the expansive lake brings an overwhelming sense of calm and gratitude, making every moment on the water worthwhile.

My adventure fishing for walleye on Lake Francis Case continually far exceeds my expectations. The excitement of the catch, combined with the stunning scenery, reaffirms my love for angling.

If walleye fishing in South Dakota is on your bucket list, mark your calendars for that magical moment when the ice melts. You'll discover that the lake offers much more than just fish; it promises unforgettable adventures and a profound connection with the great outdoors.

For those interested in planning trips, remember that the best walleye fishing coincides with the season's first days of spring. As the ice recedes, the opportunities for catches abound for those who are prepared in February and March. Let us help you create memories during ice out and throughout the season.  April fishing has also been phenomenal!  With warmer, mild temperatures, we anticipate a highly successful May walleye-bite, in addition to excellent small mouth bass. We are off to a great start!

Here’s to future fishing adventures!
